John Jonik
Philadelphian, plus local Havertown and Haverford, since beginning in 1942. Spent a lot of time hitchhiking globally...all US states (incl. Hawaii and Alaska), Europe, Canada, Central and South America, Australia & New Zealand, Tahiti, Japan and even S. Vietnam in '72, during the war. Went to Penna. Academy of the Fine Arts and received Cresson Traveling Scholarship in '65. Regular humor cartoons went to New Yorker, National Lampoon, Mad (once) and a host of other periodicals. Editorial cartoons, begun when Gen. Schwartzkopf began Gulf War bombing, went to all sorts of politically focused periodicals. Old work on general political/social themes is even today being re-used. Cartoon work is now collected at the U of Penn Archives
Artist Statement
Been doing cartoons since 2nd grade. Painting, in early 60's. Woodworks, somewhat later. Visual work sends messages to many, as does written or spoken work, but images plant the ideas or feelings in a different way.
